Setup Instructions for Advanced Membership
Advanced Membership Setup Instructions

STEP ONE:

      a) First create a database on your webhosting account called links. If you already have a links database for another program, you may use a different database name. Login to your webhosting account. When you signed up at your web host you were sent a welcome email with your ACCOUNT INFORMATION for your website which contains your username and password along with the link to your control panel. Login to your control panel at your host. You should have an icon for mySQL databases. Click on this icon to go into your mySQL Account Maintenance. You should find an input box to create a new database. Create the database called links by entering the word links into the box and click the create database button.

      b) Next, create a user name and password for the database by entering a user name and password into the boxes and then click on the create user button. (make sure 'all' privileges are selected) Or, you can also use an existing user, however insure that the privileges are set to 'all' for this user.

      c)
Next, link the user to this database. There should be two drop down boxes, one for the users and one for the databases. Select the correct user and database and click the 'Add user to database' button. You also need to be sure that you have enabled the database for a remote connection. Please check the access hosts section of your mySQL Account Maintenance page carefully. Enter the Link-Exchangers IP address into the "Access Hosts" section of your account maintenance screen. The IP address is 216.119.125.175 You may need to check with your webhost regarding how to enable a remote connection to your database if they do not use the CPanel software as their control panel. Either check your hosts online documentation or simply give them a call. This is required in order for Link-Exchangers.com to work properly with your database. Finally, be sure you have written down your database name, database username, and password and store them in a safe place such as a spreadsheet where you keep other password information.

STEP TWO:

If you're not already at the Download area of the Advanced member setup wizard, login to your account at Link-Exchangers.com and click on the link for Advanced site setup on the right side under Advanced membership. Your account login and password is the same as when you originally signed up. You will see some links which were not displayed here previously under your free membership where you manually create links. Choose your site listed under the drop down box and you'll be taken automatically to the download area of the setup wizard.

STEP THREE:

Download the script to your hard drive by clicking on the link. You need to have the winzip utility installed on your computer. You can get winzip free by going to Winzip. Use Winzip to unzip the archive into the root directory on your hard drive. C:\ Simply double click on the script.zip file you just saved to your hard drive and it will open in winzip. Next click Extract from the Winzip menu and select a location for it on your hard drive. Simply highly your C: drive and it will create a folder called links containing all the files to be uploaded to your web host.

STEP FOUR:

FTP to your hosting account and upload the links folder with all its contents directly to your root directory, or to another directory on your account. The path should be http://www.mydomain.com/links/ or http://www.mydomain.com/subdirectory/links/ Once uploaded, go into your admin folder and chmod 777 the file config.php. Depending on your ftp client, some will allow you to change the file permissions by selecting the file with your left click, and then right clicking your mouse. A menu should open, and look for Properties/Chmod on the menu and set the file permissions to 777 by checking the read, write, and execute checkboxes under each user group. Next be sure you set the permissions to the links folder to 777 also so your pages will be created.

STEP FIVE:

Now go back to the download page and enter the correct path you created into the box at the bottom of the page and click the next button on the setup wizard. In the next screen you'll need to input your mySQL server name, your database username, and database password which you created in step one. For your mySQL server, input your domain name as www.domain.com or domain.com unless your server has a different access link for the mysql server. (You may need to check with your host if www.domain.com or domain.com doesn't work.) After filling in these fields, click on the 'Fill Databases' button. This will fill in your databases if you entered your information correctly. Select the links database or other database you created for Link-Exchangers. Click the next button and your Advanced member installation will be completed. If your databases don't fill in, you'll need to manually put the database name into the database field, and then click the fill databases button followed by the next button.

That's it!  After configuring your advanced membership, be sure to create some categories for your links page, and customize your template file as well. Your template file is located in your links directory, and it consists of the basic #TABLE# tag. This will fill in your directory table on your page. You may use any blank page from your website and simply paste the tag into the main body of the page. You'll be able to customize the text font, size, # of links, etc. We have prepared a video on how to customize this page so that it seamlessly blends with your website. You may view this video by clicking here. Also be sure to click on "Mywebsites" and go into your link filters and setup your filters for the types of websites from which you want to receive link requests.

At the helpdesk you may register to send us a trouble ticket, or search the knowledgebase for answers to your questions. There are some helpful videos to help you with your installation as well as how to create a database on your webhost. Your categories and links are stored on your server as well as on the Link-Exchangers.com server, and you may restore your database should it ever become necessary. You'll also be able to clean out your database as well as the Link-Exchangers.com database and start completely from scratch if you desire. If it appears your html pages are out of sync with your database, you can transfer everything from Link-Exchangers to your sql database and your pages will be recreated. These features are located under Link Database Settings and there is more information in the knowledgebase on how to use them.
